my blog post for week 0

So - here are some questions for this week. "What would you like to learn in Philosophy?" "What would make this course worthwhile and enriching for you?" "What can we learn from philosophy?"

Well, since I know absolutely nothing about philosophy at all, first I'd like to know more about some of the basics of philosophy - what is it all about, who are the most famous philosophers and what did they say? Did they really think so differently from everyone else around them, and if so, what made them so different? I hardly know anything about what Socrates or Plato actually talked about, or what their philosophies were. I just read in the text book introduction that philosophy is the love of wisdom. If philosophy is really the love of wisdom, and the search for truth, surely everyone should be interested in it! Maybe everyone is a potential philosopher, but they just need someone to get the conversation started :)

I will feel like I've really gotten something out of this course if I come out of it being able to question things in an intelligent way, if I can allow some of my strongest beliefs to be challenged, and if I can open my mind to different ways of seeing things.
